As you know, the government will be knocking on your door again in 2010 for the decennial (every 10 years) census to find out all about you and the people living with you. For every household, it’s important that you complete the survey…well, it’s required by law… so Black people are counted and programs benefiting Black communities are funded by the federal government. The government uses census data to redraw state legislative and congressional districts which affects how seats in the House of Representatives are apportioned, and to distribute funds for government programs (e.g., Medicaid, schools, roads). The federal government distributes $300 billion annually to local and state governments!

Interesting facts can be gleaned from the survey, like the top Black surnames in America (Census 2000–“In order of greatest likelihood”):

WASHINGTON

JEFFERSON

BOOKER

BANKS

JACKSON

MOSLEY

DORSEY

GAINES

RIVERS

JOSEPH

Looks like the founding fathers really made the rounds.

Be counted.

Speak your peace.
