A Movie Worth Watching: Gospel Hill

18Feb09

Veteran actor Giancarlo Esposito produced, directed, and starred in this quiet film about small-town life in South Carolina that gets more interesting with each passing minute–parallel storylines examine the social and emotional aftermath of the martyrdom of a 60s civil rights activist, played by Samuel L. Jackson, and the present-day development of a golf course in the town’s poor black community. Angela Bassett, Danny Glover, Nia Long, Taylor Kitsch, Julia Stiles, Adam Baldwin, and RZA round out the cast.

Angela Bassett gives the strongest, most passionate, performance. Nia Long steals every scene she appears in with her glowing beauty. Danny Glover’s character is perhaps a little too reticent and withdrawn, but  Mr. Esposito delivers a solid film that’s both engaging and touching. Gospel Hill is out on DVD and it is so worth watching. Check out the trailer:

We need more quality Black films like this one that represent the full spectrum of the Black Experience.

Speak your peace.
