Watermelon White House

This picture was sent via email this week (w/o 2/23/09) to an African-American businesswoman in Los Alamitos, CA, by that city’s mayor, Dean Grose. The woman, Keyanus Price, demanded a public apology and shared her story with the OC Register. She received an e-mailed apology and the mayor also left a voicemail message.

We shall overcome…some day.

By the way, watermelon is a superfood and an extremely healthy food choice.

Update 3/2/09: On Thursday, local police were patrolling Mayor Dean Grose’s home and office after a smashed watermelon was found in front of his office. The mayor has said he will resign, because the controversy surrounding the picture (above) he sent to local African-American businesswoman Keyanus Price compromises his ability to lead the city. The e-mailed picture included the caption “No Easter egg hunt this year.” Earlier last week, the OC Register printed this letter from Grose to the City Council, Price, and her boss:

I am deeply embarrassed in receiving your email, and for any harm or hurt that it may have caused. It was poor judgement on my part and was never intended to be offensive to Ms. Price, your company or anyone in the African American Community. I have exchanged emails with Ms. Price in the past.

I can fully understand your concerns and comments. Please be advised that I have left a voice mail for Ms. Price and will also be sending her a separate email with my apology. You can be assured that I will not allow this to happen again. I in no way was representing the City of Los Alamitos, or my role as a council member in sending this out and it went via my private business email. That doesn’t justify the fact that it was sent, however, we gratefully appreciate the contributions that your company makes to our community and I wish to publically apologize to anyone within the firm or organization that may have been offended.

I am truly sorry.

Dean Grose

You can’t make this stuff up.

Speak your peace.

Keyanus Price needs to lighten up. Watermelons. For cryin’ out loud.

Black people are sensitive about watermelons and monkeys. Yes we are.
