Update (3/9/09): Although many Zimbabweans believe otherwise, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said Monday he doesn’t believe the car accident that killed his wife on Friday was caused by foul play. He plans to bury his beloved Susan this week.

Rest in peace.

(3/7/09) Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was injured in the car crash Friday that killed his wife Susan. She was 50. The couple was traveling to a rally in the prime minister’s hometown, near the capital of Harare. The parents of 6 children, the Tsvangirais had been married for over 30 years.

Interestingly, President Robert Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980 and spent $250,000 last week to celebrate his 85th birthday, is part of a power-sharing agreement established last month with long-time opposition leader Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. Just last week, Tsvangirai demanded a halt to Mugabe-supported seizures of white-owned farms in the southern African country. Mugabe is trying to rid the country of the few remaining white farm owners. Tsvangirai contends these seizures are illegal. This week, Tsvangirai sustains injuries and his wife is killed in a head-on collision with a large truck. Hmmm.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Tsvangirai family.

Speak your peace.
