Christine Beatty released from jail

Former Detroit mayoral aide Christine Beatty was released from jail today at 12:01 a.m. (EDT). She served 70 days of a 120-day sentence for felony charges in last year’s text-message scandal that exposed corruption in city government and a love affair between Beatty and former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Beatty was released early for good behavior. Kilpatrick was released from jail last month after serving 99 days of a 120-day sentence.

Hundreds more text messages were released last week by a Wayne County circuit court judge at the urging of the Detroit Free Press. The daily newspaper broke the original story in January 2008.

We hope these two have learned some important lessons and can put their lives back together. We hope the Detroit Free Press can move on to something else.

Speak your peace.
